The Gold Standard of Support

This prestigious recognition is reserved for colleges and universities that go above and beyond in providing exceptional support and resources to student veterans and veteran-connected students. The award itself is divided into three tiers: gold, silver, and bronze, each reflecting the level of services offered. Criteria encompass a dedicated space for meetings and study, priority registration, academic advising, access to computers and other resources, as well as work-study opportunities.

In 2022, Texas A&M University-Texarkana received the Silver Award. However, this year, they've soared to new heights by claiming the coveted Gold Award, a testament to their unwavering dedication.

A Hub for Success

Situated on the first floor of the Building for Academic and Student Services, the Veterans Services Center at A&M-Texarkana provides a spacious, welcoming environment for students. Here, they can gather, host events, and utilize computer workstations for their coursework. Additionally, a private study area offers a serene space for studying or collaborating on group projects. The center even provides light snacks for military-associated students.

Overseeing this remarkable center is Robert Hernandez, a 30-year Veteran of the United States Air Force. Hernandez emphasized their commitment to assisting students throughout their entire university journey, from navigating the admissions process to understanding available benefits, and even connecting them with tutors and academic support when needed. Their goal? To ensure every student crosses the graduation stage successfully.

More Than Just a Center

Beyond its study spaces and workstations, the Veterans Services Center also serves as a haven for relaxation. Wes Hervey, a U.S. Navy veteran who served for seven years before embarking on his college career, expressed the importance of having a place where veterans can connect. He noted that veterans often share similar experiences and challenges, making it invaluable to have a space where they can bond with those who understand their journey.

A Proud Commitment

Texas A&M University-Texarkana takes immense pride in supporting veterans pursuing their education. Dr. Ross Alexander, President of A&M-Texarkana, commended Mr. Hernandez and his dedicated team for achieving this prestigious honor.
